Sat. Jan. 24th, 11am: Patriot Book Club
In honor of our country’s 250th anniversary this year, we are promoting books that explore the many stories of 1776. Pick up a copy of the 1974 book “My Brother Sam is Dead” at the front desk and discuss it with us today. It’s a short, award-winning fiction book accessible for ages 10 and up, although rough language and violence are part of the story. In it, a father fights for the English Loyalists, while one of his sons, Sam, joins the Patriot cause. Caught in the middle, younger son Tim must try to decide who he will fight for.
"My Brother Sam is Dead" by James Lincoln Collier & Christopher Collier was ranked in ALA's "Most Frequently Challenged Books" and "Banned/Challenged Books" from 1990 to 2000 and 2000 to 2009. The book explores the brutal realities of war, where even the most noble cause requires terrible sacrifices.
