Come and read with a real racehorse!
Derek the horse was born in New Zealand. He competed in harness racing there and then in the United States until he got hurt. Author Amber Sawyer and her son Paul adopted him and nursed him back to health, and Derek set off on a comeback tour, eventually becoming one of the oldest winning racehorses in the United States.
Derek is retired now, and he and Amber want to share their book "Love to Race." It's a picture book about Derek's amazing career, told from the horse's perspective.
Families will be able to listen to the book, meet Derek, and do a fun craft. This special evening story time is free and open to all ages.
Amber and Derek had their first book signing at Goshen Historic Track in New York. They are now touring libraries and schools in their home state (Wisconsin).
Amber Sawyer has also been freelance writer for Hoof Beats, the largest Harness Racing magazine in the country, as well as writing for the Wisconsin Horseman’s News and the Wisconsin Harness Horseman’s Association. Derek has been at the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison for five or six years in a row, appeared in The Daily Citizen Newspaper, was featured in two issues of Hoof Beats magazine, and appeared on Wisconsin Public Television’s Around the Corner With John McGivern.
